Organic cows are getting closer

Published: 15 February 2018

The animal husbandry association “Växa Sverige” has recently released their yearly statistics on cows. The statistics show, among other things, results for yields, fertility, recruitment and age distribution. The number of organic dairy cows has decreased somewhat in this year's statistics. In spite of that, the production of organic milk was about the same and the organic cows are getting closer to the conventional in the amount of milk produced per cow.

The difference in milk yield between an organic and a conventional cow is now 657 kg versus 694 the year before. The organic cows also provide a milk that contains lower levels of fat and protein, which means that if you count on energy-corrected milk, the difference is 884 kg instead. However, an organic dairy cow lives on average longer than a conventional and has better fertility.
