Erik Brockwell joins the Department of Economics

Published: 26 September 2017

Interview with researcher Erik Brockwell who joined the department on august 14th 2017.

-       How come you applied for a job at the department of economics?

Previously, as a PhD student at Umeå University, my main focus was in environmental and resource economics. At Umeå, I was also a member of the Centre for Environmental and Resource Economics (CERE) where we worked closely with members of SLU at Umeå. Such work involved project development, research and funding applications. Using this experience, as well as bringing in additional experience working in the public sector and with NGOs, a position at SLU is a logical choice to continue research in important environmental and resource issues.

-       What projects will you be involved in?

My main task is to conduct research on strategies to improve the environment in the Baltic Sea through actions in the surrounding countries. These tasks are funded externally (GO4BALTIC and NutriTrade) and specifically aim to analyse socio-economic institutions and instruments, technological  and institutional innovation as well as mussel harvests as part of emissions trading.

Five quick questions:

- Home cooked food or take away?
Home cooked food – If I wasn’t an economist, I’d be a chef. Although pizza when watching NFL games can’t be beat.

- Books or Netflix?
Both about the same. Netflix/HBO to chill out in the evening sometimes (GoT, Marvel shows and John Oliver especially). Before bed, Star Wars and Stephen King novels.

- Tea or coffee?
Coffee – dark and strong

- Microeconomics or econometrics?
Microeconomics

- Sunny beaches or ski resort?
Sunny beaches – I ski too fast for my own good and skill level.

Is there anything else that you think is interesting?

Years ago when I did my PhD, I made a YouTube channel in 2013 mixing economics with a dash of political science and humor.
