Habitat management in Mediterranean fruit orchards to foster pollinator and natural enemy communities

seminars, workshops |

Welcome to this seminar by Neus Rodriguez-Gasol, postdoctor at the Department of Ecology, SLU. She will give an overview of the main results of her PhD thesis dealing with diverse aspects of the maintenance and promotion of pollination and biological control in Mediterranean fruit orchards.

The thesis is divided in 4 parts for which the main objectives were: 1) Assessment of the effects of transformation of rainfed areas into irrigation, and its consequent agricultural intensification, on two of the main groups of pollinators (wild bees and hoverflies), 2) Evaluation of the establishment of a flower margin to promote beneficials in apple orchards, 3) Study of the attractiveness of different flower traits to hoverflies in order to better understand their foraging behaviour, and 4) Review the existing literature related to the ecology of predatory hoverflies and their ecosystem services in agricultural systems.
