Questions & answers

About Nät 2.0

1. What is Nät 2.0?

Nät 2.0 is SLU's initiative to modernise and future-proof the existing network. The current network cannot fully meet today's demands for higher capacity, better performance, and stricter security.

Within the project of Nät 2.0, new, modern network equipment is therefore being introduced and gradually implemented in the business. The project includes both wired and wireless network (WiFi) connectivity, with the goal of creating a more stable, secure and scalable network for future needs.

2. Why is SLU replacing its network?

SLU's existing network has needed replacement for several years. It is based on an outdated design and uses old equipment, where important components are no longer supported and spare parts are not available. Since the current network cannot meet modern requirements for increased capacity and stricter security requirements, new network equipment based on modern technology has been acquired and is now being implemented as part of the Nät 2.0 project.

3. Who will be affected by the activation of the new network?

The activation of the new network affects all businesses, users and connected devices in the buildings and locations that are currently connected to Nät 1.0, a total of over 120 buildings in about 20 locations around the country.

4. Why is WiFi prioritised in Nät 2.0?

WiFi is the first choice for most users because it provides sufficient performance for everyday work while allowing for a more flexible working day without the need for network cables.

Building and maintaining an extensive wired network is costly. By primarily using WiFi for laptops, for example, the need for network sockets, cabling and network equipment is reduced. It also allows wired connections to be reserved for businesses and equipment that really need them, such as advanced lab equipment and other systems with high demands on stable and consistent bandwidth.

If you currently use a wired network, such as via a docking station, you can unplug the network cable and use WiFi instead. On SLU-managed computers, you automatically connect to WiFi when the network cable is disconnected, given that WiFi is enabled.

The new WiFi network within Nät 2.0 also offers better performance and stability than before and is adapted for many simultaneous users. When wired connection is still needed, this is ensured through inventory and dialogue with the business.

5. What role does the wired network play in Nät 2.0?

A wired network will be available for those who really need it, such as TentaService, complex laboratory equipment or devices that handle large amounts of data. All other users are encouraged to use the WiFi instead of the wired network. This is important because equipping a building with an extensive wired network is associated with high costs. By transferring as many devices as possible to WiFi (a typical example is a regular office computer), we reduce SLU's need to buy expensive extra equipment and free up cable slots in the network infrastructure for those who really need a wired connection.

Within the scope of Nät 2.0, the project ensures that devices that have been connected to the wired network during the last six months are transferred and function in the new network. In the inventory work, seasonal units are also captured through dialogue with the business, to ensure continued function where a wired connection is needed.

Activation

1. How is the activation of Nät 2.0 between sites and buildings prioritised?

The prioritization of the activation is based on an overall assessment of several factors. Among other things, technical conditions, network dependencies and the extent of preparatory measures required (e.g. fibre and cabling) are considered in the planning.

The project also considers the local business and tries to plan the activation as far as possible so that the impact on ongoing work is as small as possible.

To ensure an efficient and quality-assured activation, the project will start with more standardized environments, which will provide the opportunity to build experience before more complex locations and buildings are handled later in the project. The planning is updated continuously based on these conditions.

2. When is it my turn to get Nät 2.0?

The activation of Nät 2.0 is taking place gradually and according to an order of priority that the project continuously adapts. Therefore, there is currently no fixed date for all buildings and locations.

Before each activation, affected businesses are informed in good time, so that users and local functions have time to prepare for the transition to the new network. The information will be sent by e-mail approximately one week before the activation takes place.

The project team also has an ongoing dialogue with the designated contact persons for each building and location, who are involved in the planning prior to activation.

If you have questions about when Nät 2.0 will be activated for your city or building, you are welcome to contact nat2@slu.se.

3. What happens before activation of Nät 2.0?

Before Nät 2.0 can be activated, the project carries out several preparatory activities to ensure that all technical and operational prerequisites are in place. This includes:

  • Verify that the buildings have a functioning and sufficient fiber infrastructure that is compatible with the new network (Single Mode).
  • Ensure that all network infrastructure is updated to the right standard (e.g. cabling, KK cabinets).
  • Ensure access points are properly mounted.
  • Configure and deliver switches to each location.

In parallel, an inventory is being carried out together with the business to map needs and identify which units are currently connected to Nät 1.0. The purpose is to ensure that existing equipment also works correctly in the new network, Nät 2.0.

In addition to the inventory, the business is also involved in other parts of the preparatory work if necessary, to ensure that local conditions and specific requirements in different buildings and in locations around the country are met.

4. Will the new wireless network (WiFi) and the wired network be activated at the same time?

Yes, both the wireless network (WiFi) and the wired network will be enabled as part of the same rollout. However, the activation itself takes place gradually over a period that can range from a few days up to a few weeks.

To minimize the impact on users, WiFi is always activated first. While WiFi is activated, the existing wired network can continue to be used. When WiFi is in place, the activation of the new wired network then begins, and then WiFi can be used in the meantime.

This sequential activation ensures that there is always at least one working network available throughout the transition period.

5. Will my work be disrupted when the new network is activated?

During the activation of the new network, there may be short-term and temporary disruptions, but the goal is to minimize the impact on daily work. Activation takes place planned and in stages within a limited time window to ensure the smoothest possible transition.

First, the wireless network (WiFi) is activated. During this phase, the existing wired network will operate as usual. Once WiFi is in place, the replacement and activation of the wired network then begin, and then the new WiFi can be used instead.

Some devices may need extra time to connect to the new network because they require special configuration. This is planned in dialogue with the affected business to minimize the impact and avoid unnecessary interruptions.

6. If all buildings at my site are not upgraded to Nät 2.0 at the same time, do I need to log in to different networks when moving between buildings?

No. After you connect to the new network for the first time, your device will automatically connect to the network closest to your location, whether it's Nät  1.0 or Nät 2.0.

7. What happens if I go from a site that has Nät 1.0 to a site that has Nät 2.0?

If this is your first time connecting to Nät 2.0, follow the instructions under How do I connect to the new network via WiFi? above. Once you have connected to the new network for the first time, your device will automatically connect to the network that is in the city you are in.

Connection

1. Which network should I use?

The network you should connect to depends on the type of device you're using:

  • Employees with SLU-managed computers must connect to SLU WiFi.
  • Other devices that are not managed by SLU's IT (e.g. mobile phones, tablets or other equipment) must be connected to SLU Guest.
  • Students use eduroam as before.

2.     How do I connect to Nät 2.0 via WiFi?

How you connect to the new WiFi network depends on the type of device you are using.

SLU-managed computers:

Make sure your computer is restarted and up to date. When the new network has been activated, your computer will automatically connect to SLU WiFi.

Other units:

Devices that are not managed by SLU IT, such as mobile phones, tablets or other equipment that is not IT-managed, are connected manually via the device's WiFi settings to SLU Guest. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the connection.

Students:

Students connect to eduroam as before and log in in the same way as before with their existing information.

3. How do I connect new wired devices to Nät 2.0?

How the connection takes place depends on whether the device is managed by SLU's IT Division or not.

  • New computers managed by SLU IT

For IT-managed computers, the connection is automatic when the network cable is plugged in, in the same way as when connecting to WiFi. If the connection is not automatic, you will be asked to log in with your SLU account (username and password).

  • New units that are not managed by SLU IT

New devices that are not IT-managed require special configuration before they can be connected to Nät 2.0 via wired network. To get help with this, you need to contact the service desk and create a ticket. The network group then handles the connection.

4. How do I ensure that existing and wired devices are switched over to Nät 2.0?

The project’s approach is to move all devices that have been connected to the wired network in the past six months. In the inventory process, seasonal equipment is also captured through dialogue with the business, even if it is not used continuously.

Equipment and other devices that are not standard computers require additional steps before they can be connected to Nät 2.0. Therefore, all such devices must be identified and authenticated before they can access the new network. Therefore, all such devices need to be identified and authenticated before they can access the new network.

Prior to activation of each location or building, an inventory of existing wired devices is carried out, with the aim of ensuring that, for example, servers, sensors, NASs and other network-connected equipment also function correctly in Nät 2.0.

If you have equipment that is or has been connected to the wired network, it is important that you let us know. Please contact the project via nat2@slu.se so that the equipment can be included in the inventory.

5. What do I do if I can’t connect to the network?

If you can't connect to the network, first check the following:

If you use WiFi:

  • Make sure that WiFi is enabled and that you are connected to the correct network
  • Try turning WiFi off and on again
  • If you are using a wired connection: Unplug the network cable and plug it back in
  • If the problem persists: Restart your computer or device

If this does not solve the problem, please contact the service desk and create a ticket:

Web: https://internt.slu.se/stod-service/admin-stod/it/IT-support/

6. I currently have network equipment such as switches and routers connected to the network. Will I be able to continue using them?

In Nät 2.0, it is not allowed to connect network equipment that is not managed by SLU IT-department, such as your own switches or routers. It is also not allowed to store network equipment in open office areas. his follows the security guidelines from MSB that SLU follows. In connection with the roll-out of the new network, unauthorized network equipment will therefore stop working.

If needed, the project can offer alternative solutions, such as:

  • Connecting equipment to Wi-Fi, where feasible
  • Installing additional network outlets

The exact need is captured in connection with the inventory prior to activation, and the solution is then planned in dialogue with the affected business.

If you have network equipment that is or has been connected to the wired network, please contact the project via nat2@slu.se so that the equipment can be included in the inventory.

7. Will my connection be affected when I work from home?

No, Nät 2.0 does not affect your home connection. You will still use your private internet connection and SLU's VPN services in the same way as before. The changes only apply to the network on SLU's campus and other properties.

8. Will my landline phone work on the new network?

No, landlines (IP phones) will not work on the new network. IP telephony is not supported by Nät 2.0 and will therefore be phased out.

A decision has been made that all fixed telephony at SLU will be phased out by 1 March 2026 at the latest, with the exception of Hästkliniken in VHC in Ultuna.

Alternative telephony solutions, such as mobile telephony with PBX functions, are managed by the telephony group. If you have any questions about which options apply to you or your business, please contact the telephony group.

Performance and user experince

1. Will WiFi be faster and more stable for me as a user?

Yes – for the vast majority of users, the wireless network will be perceived as both faster and more stable.

Nät 2.0 is built to handle higher speeds and more simultaneous users than the previous network. The wireless network is based on WiFi 6 and offers speeds of around 100-600 Mbps, which is significantly more than most everyday tasks require. In comparison, a Teams or Zoom video meeting typically uses only 2-4 Mbps.

However, the actual experience of speed and stability can vary depending on factors such as how many people are connected to the same access point, distance to the access point, and any bottlenecks in the network. Therefore, the experience may differ between different places and situations.

For tasks that require high and consistent bandwidth (around 100-200 Mbps or more), a wired connection is still primarily recommended.

2. What do I do if the connection feels slow or unstable?

Start by testing the following:

  • Make sure your computer is up to date and has the latest certificates.
  • Make sure you're connected to the correct network.
  • Try disconnecting and reconnecting to the network.
  • Restart your computer.

If the problems persist, contact the service desk and register a case so that the network group or the service desk can investigate the problem further.

Printing

1. How do I print on the new network?

Printing on Nät 2.0 is done in the same way as in the current network. One option is to email your printouts to printers - read more about how here.

Updated needs

1. How do I get Nät 2.0 in a new building?

If you want a new building to be connected to Nät 2.0, this needs to be reported well in advance by creating a case at the service desk.

The network group then handles the case and prioritises the work based on other ongoing commitments and the building's operational significance. The timetable and implementation are planned in dialogue when the matter has been raised.

2. I have an increased need for wired connection, what do I do then?

For example, you may need to add an extra switch, connect new equipment, or otherwise expand the wired connection.

Due to increased security requirements in the new network, all new wired connections need to be managed through the IT department. Non-standard devices require special handling to connect.

If you need to connect a new device via wired network, please contact the service desk and create a ticket. The network group will then provide feedback with a plan adapted to the unit in question and the need.
