Seed money call for interdisciplinary research

What can you apply for?

1. Short-term projects/pilot studies, which could be the basis for larger interdisciplinary projects, such as field trials, forest or people surveys, and short reviews.
2. Writing applications with an inter-, multi- or transdisciplinary approach.

The funds can be used for salary, costs of stay and travel for those involved in the project and for organizing seminars/workshops.

Who can apply?

Researchers at SLU, Skogforsk and Umeå University (UmU). Involving junior colleagues is strongly encouraged. It is also encouraged to involve at least one key actor outside of academia as co-applicant.

How much can you apply for?

You can apply for 50 000-100 000 SEK per project. Up to five projects will be funded.

Call deadline: 1 August, 2022

Submission: Submit the proposal as a PDF to registrator-sfak@slu.se

The proposal should contain the following information:

• Short CVs of the project leader and co-applicants including the three most relevant publications (max 1 page for each applicant)
• Project description (maximum 2 pages, font size 11, Arial) describing;
• Purpose and aims
• How the project is inter-, trans- or multidisciplinary
• Planned activities including timeline
• Budget
• Ethical considerations (if relevant)
• Participating persons and the contribution of each partner
• Communication plan of the project

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for funding the proposal needs to fulfil the following criteria:

• The main applicant must be employed at SLU, Skogforsk or UmU.
• The project must be relevant for developing a sustainable future forest.

Selection criteria

The projects will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

1. The potential of the project to contribute to interdisciplinary research.
2. The project being relevant for forest science and forestry.
3. The involvement of early career scientists as well as non-academic actors.
4. The feasibility of the project in terms of timeline and budget.
5. The novelty of the project for providing innovative solutions to current problems with in the forest sector.

Evaluation process & report

The evaluation committee consists of the steering group for the Future Forests platform and the dean of the SLU Faculty of Forest Sciences. The decision will be made within one month of the submission deadline.

A selected project can start immediately after the grant contract has been signed. Projects can be up to 12 months in duration. A final report should be submitted to the Future Forests administration no later than two months after the end date of the project.
