Olle Håstad informed the faculty board of ongoing work at SLU. One important issue is how teaching should be conducted. The student representatives pointed out that it cannot be questioned whether students have personal computers or access to study material. The health aspect was also discussed: What happens if isolation becomes long-term and social relationships suffer? The faculty board commended how calm and reasonable teachers, directors of studies and students have been in light of this new situation. Recruitment matters Malin Ekström has been appointed gender equality and equal opportunities officer. The post is divided 50/50 between the VH and NJ faculties. Ricarda Engberg from Aarhus University and Hans H. Stein from the University of Illinois are the experts who will assess Emma Ivarsson’s promotion to docent. The faculty board also decided to extend Kyra Kyrklund’s employment as adjunct professor in equitation until 7 November 2020. The post of acting vice-dean for gender equality and equal opportunities (20 per cent of a full-time employment) is currently being advertised. Antibiotic centre SLU Global has identified a need for an antibiotic resistance centre. During the meeting, Professor Ulf Magnusson presented the ideas for creating such a centre, which should be faculty-wide at SLU. Strategy Strategy work is ongoing at the faculty. The supporting documents for the faculty strategy is input from last autumn’s workshops as well as the two-day meeting at Krusenberg in January with the faculty board, heads of department, deans and vice-deans. The idea for this preparatory work is now included in the faculty strategy formulation. Departments will soon receive a draft which they need to consider and comment on. Since the development of the faculty strategy is carried out in parallel with the SLU strategy, the proposal is not final, and changes may be necessary. External collaboration Henrik Rönnberg presented a proposal for a collaboration agreement between SLU, AniCura and Evidensia. The proposal, which was approved, will now be sent for inspection and viewpoints from the collaboration parties. A new three-year agreement period for Agricultural Research for Northern Sweden (RJN) is currently being processed. A general aim of the operational strategy is to create a joint direction for SLU. It is the vice-chancellor’s ambition to make the content in the various strategies clearly connected. The work with the university, faculty and department strategies is carried out simultaneously. Our faculty has already begun to collect as many viewpoints and perspectives as possible. This is done through workshops and inspirational seminars. It is very important that as many people as possible take part, so please register for the events. That way, we will collect good and useful input from the whole operation. Information and application links will be sent via email to everyone at the VH Faculty. The objective is to complete the foundation for the faculty strategy before the summer holidays in 2020. After they have been approved, the faculty strategies will be included as annexes to the university strategy. Agricultural programmes and businesses The agricultural programmes are currently being revised. This includes discussion meetings with relevant businesses. The first of three planned discussion meetings has been held; it involved representatives from organisations all over the country, and the purpose was to develop our agricultural education. Among other things, the meetings will include defining the agronomist profession, qualitative targets, programme-level expertise and educational purpose. The next meeting will be held in November. Status report – gender equality and equal opportunities Vice-Dean Maja Malmberg presented the new gender equality and equal opportunities (JLV) organisation, including the new role of JLV officers, which must be available at each faculty office. There is much to do within the field, and several activities have been planned. It is important to be aware that events occur, even if we do not see them. This must be made clear through focus groups for e.g. students, doctoral students and temporary employees. Future Faculty Young researchers at SLU who have a doctoral degree have become involved in the project Future Faculty. The vision is to create the best possible academic environment to allow young researchers to reach their full potential. All faculties are represented, and Maja Malmberg is the deputy chair. SLU’s digitalisation process The vice-chancellor has initiated a process for how SLU can utilise digital technology in a more efficient way. Skills supply In order to assess and estimate the faculty’s long-term skills supply needs, comprehensive work is being carried out at faculty, department and subject field level. The following is included: a morphological analysis that provides a quantitative and qualitative comprehensive picture of research, external collaboration as well as courses and programmes according to subject field; a compilation of department reports concerning skills supply needs, including priorities; current overview reports. The objective is to create an assessment model for long-term skills supply work. It is expected to be available during the first quarter of 2020. Scaw and the Scientific Council for Animal Welfare There will be an inquiry to evaluate the Swedish Centre for Animal Welfare (Scaw) and the Scientific Council for Animal Welfare. The inquiry will be led by Charlotte Hallén Sandgren with secretary Kristina Dahlborn. The work must be reported to the vice-chancellor and dean no later than 15 January 2020. Welcoming students The student representatives talked about a very successful student reception. A new thing this year was that international students were welcomed three days before the Swedish students arrived. It worked very well and made it easier to conduct international student activities. This will continue next year. Strategy 2021–2023 We established the faculty’s work with developing a new strategy for 2021–2023. Inspirational seminars have been planned for autumn, and workshops will be conducted in November. The schedule and dates for all these events will be sent to everyone at the VH Faculty. The VH Faculty’s delegation of authority The delegation of authority is being updated following the vice-chancellor’s decision to establish a gender equality and equal opportunities committee (JLV) at faculty level. Additionally, the aim of the update is to harmonise our working methods with the other faculties as well as reduce administrative management when filling new employments. Finance The mid-year financial report shows that the financial results, our balanced capital, is not decreasing according to the department budgets. In total, the VH Faculty has SEK 89.6 million in balanced capital. We are being a bit too careful due to our history of financial deficits. However, financial officer Jimmy said that it is time to get rid of the training wheels. The faculty board agreed and emphasised that the departments should use their funds to ensure that the future balanced capital does not exceed + 10 per cent. Education news Vice Dean of Undergraduate Education, Johanna Penell announced that the Faculty's two proposals for two years 50% start-up support for  senior lectureship were approved after a thorough preparatory work, and that we now can proceed in the process of recruitment. SWOT The vice-chancellor has previously requested a SWOT analysis from the faculties. Our deans and heads of department have done the analysis and the faculty board gave its comments. The insights from the analysis are that we need to prioritize competence supply and that there is a need for marketing of our research and our education. What you should worry about, however, are decisions by the vice-chancellor or the Board that can throw off the strategic plans taken at the faculty level. What have we achieved during these 3 years? Two new areas have been established, "Meat Science" and "Bioinformatics", with a professorship in each. Two cross-faculty platforms - "Future Animal, Nature and Health" and "SLU Aquaculture" - have been started, where VH has the main responsibility. We have built SLU Götala to a modern facility for beef and lamb production. Both Röbäcksdalen and Lövsta have had their rent reduced. We have accredited our veterinary program and we have doubled the number of animal nursing students. We are close to writing a new and better agreement with UDS. Last Deputy Dean letter. Melancholy? No I do not think so. I am thinking about all that has happened during these three years and how much is going on in the future! I went in with other (little naive and inexperienced) expectations than when I now finish this assignment. I have learned a lot about how the university is managed and staffed. Like it or not, it's a prerequisite for getting the right things done. I have also had the privilege of meeting significantly more competent employees than if I "just" had stayed at my own institution and specialized. The wonderful width and enthusiasm available at our faculty is a guarantee that VH will prevail for long! The strength lies in the skills and in the critical mass. Both of these parameters have (at last) increased to a minimum level I think. We have every chance of combining our amazing infrastructures with even more skills and students to increase our production of good research and well-educated graduates in our societal important sectors! However, in some specific programs, there is now a need in terms of space and without addition to both the premises and the teaching staff, it will not be good for anyone. It feels like we have a good dialogue with the SLU management about this and of course we will continue to ensure that we get good solutions in the big project that the "double the students vision" means. Personally, I am very pleased about how U-Share has developed. We have a good group and there is a lot to gain from working closer to the UU in medicine and biochemistry. The exciting project of letting a PostDoc from us be 2 years in MedFarm and a corresponding product with us is a clear result of the work in U-Share. Here, a VD-student at VH gets the opportunity to do a PostDoc at another university (world class) without having to move! Very good for many reasons. In addition, competition is not likely to be as great as the application of e.g. VR. In addition, we have an opportunity to connect with new networks at UU both from the PostDoc we "get" and the one we "lend". Hey all! Finally! As sure as it will not be a Nobel Prize in Literature this year, it will be a wonderful summer! It's soccer world cup, school has finished and I was on my twelfth graduation at the school of the kids! It was of course absolutely wonderful and everyone is so sweet and expectant! As an adult, we are not allowed to become blasé. We've been in before. We know that the time goes faster the older you become. We have already learned (we believe in any case) what the kids will learn next year. When I arrived at the university, I was naive, expectant and felt it was going to be great to learn everything I could get hold of! We must not forget that today's students are equally set, with all expectation and naivety. They are to be dressed in knowledge and experience. We are the teachers who stand for this and even if we tell for the tenth time the same thing, it is completely new to the students! That we are still hungry to learn our knowledge is contagious for the students who then think it's more fun to be here! We have the best students in the world at SLU and we are the world's best SLU! Research is the basis of the teaching we conduct at a university, so we must be as eager to take on that task too! MU (employee survey) shows that VH's employees are happy at work, have difficulties in separating work from leisure, and are satisfied with their immediate superiors but not with SLU's management. Deputy Dean Henrik Rönnberg: I've had a good introduction to my work as Chairman of Associate Professorship board. Many applications were received. Then came the spring’s Associate Professorship lectures and that day was very successful! We have decided to promote this "feast" even better in the future, so that as many as possible will come and hear the latest research at the Faculty. It was very successful and we heard many positive comments about our facilities and ways of running undergraduate training in the veterinary program from international representatives at corresponding programs. This bodes well for next year's accreditation/evaluation of the veterinary program at SLU. Work on VH's strategy is moving forward. We have had our first meeting with the Faculty board and the department heads together with GHAL. A first draft is about to be put together, so we will have a relatively complete document to deal with at the next strategy meeting with GHAL in June, just before midsummer. Vice Dean of Collaboration ( Swe . samverkan) Margareta Emanuelson: We are landing the Faculty’s newly instated committee for cooperation, consisting of External Collaboration Specialist ( Swe . samverkanslektorer). The work of this committee will be focused on coordinating the cooperation activities at the Faculty and to develop common guidelines on how the External Collaboration Specialist will work. This work will be in tune with SLU's ambitions that will be coordinated by the Collaboration council led by Erik Fahlbeck. The first meeting with will be 3 June when we will discuss strategies for SLU's collaboration work. We are also creating a new Committee for farm livestock. This committee will address common issues. The first, very concrete work has focused on developing a strong program for SLU's participation at Elmia Agriculture in October. Vice Dean of Education, Anne-Marie D a lin : By reason of the new strategy, worked is being done on different levels on a policy document on education at SLU. Hippologen are giving admission examinations. The departments are working hard on the autumn launch of courses in the revised animal agronomist programs. Bachelor programs DSS and E&D have their graduations 3 June where our Dean and I will be participating. Vice Dean responsible for postgraduate education and equal opportunities, Lena Lidfors, reports that the new FUN composed of many new members have had two meetings and is hold its last meeting before the summer on 10 June. Our Director of Postgraduate Studies, Maria Neil, completed her assignment on 31 March and the new director will be Jan Hultgren, beginning his duties on 1 July.
