There is a full-service printing office on the Ultuna campus. The Ultuna printing office specialises in producing printed material using digital technology. We handle more or less all types of printing, regardless of method.

Read more about various printed materials and printing tips below. Please contact us if you have any further questions.

  • What is your “spikdatum” (announcement of the date of your thesis defence)?
  • Which Palette reference should be used for payment?
  • How many copies would you like to print?

File formats for different parts of the thesis

  • The introductory chapter in pdf
  • Articles (appendixes) in pdf
  • Notification of submission of a doctoral thesis in pdf
  • Back cover text in .doc
  • Possible image on front page in .tif or .jpg

Delivery
To which address and addressee should the thesis be sent? If you want to pick up your thesis at the printing office, please let us know.

You will get a sample copy from us. Please proofread it and get back to us as quickly as possible with any changes that are required. You must approve the sample before we start printing.

When you submit your thesis, we need all the files and information listed above. It usually takes about 2 weeks from the submission date until the thesis is proofed and printed – 3 weeks if you live somewhere other than Uppsala.

Email your thesis to us at repro@slu.se and we will help.

Suggestion: Contact us as early as possible. If we can prepare your project well in advance, this reduces the risk of extra work and last-minute adjustments. This also helps reduce printing costs.

Instructions and templates:

Legal deposit copies:
The Legal Deposit Act also applies to doctoral theses and states that all printed/copied material must be submitted to the university libraries and the National Library of Sweden (KB) – a total of 7 copies. More information on legal deposit copies and the act can be found on KB’s web pages. If you have any questions, please contact the SLU library.

ISBN and ISSN numbers:
Doctoral theses and other publications are given ISBN and ISSN numbers by the SLU library. More on ISSN and ISBN numbers.

Colour print

1. Scanning images.
Many scan their own images using document scanners, etc. They are cheap but the quality varies. However, most scanners give good results IF the settings are optimised for the printed material in question. It is important not to scan an image using a file format that does not compress the file or “ruins” the image. The preferred format is .tif. The image may be large, but decide on the size when scanning – that way, it will not be too big or too small.

The most optimal resolution to use when scanning images is the one SLU’s printing offices use: 300 dpi. N.B. If you are unsure of how to proceed or do not own a scanner, contact us and we will help.

2. Choosing a colour spectrum.
Common colour spaces are RGB (Red Green Blue) CMYK (Cyan Magenta Yellow Black) and PMS (Pantone Matching System).

RGB and CMYK are colour spaces for coloured images. RGB has a greater spectrum (more shades) and CMYK has a much smaller colour spectrum. PANTONE is a colour chart with fixed colours. The best choice for printed material is RGB – it gives the best result.

If you are unsure, please contact us.
We strongly recommend that you contact us before you start producing the files for your printed material. If things are correct from the beginning, the final cost is cheaper, and the material is of the best possible quality.

Visual identity and design

If requested, we also provide designs for printed material.

If you personally produce printed material which is connected to SLU’s visual identity, it is important that you follow the requirements. Read more here about the brand guidelines and SLU's logotype.

Envelopes

As of March, there are new procedures for purchasing business cards and printed envelopes. All purchases paid for by SLU must be made using Proceedo.

Important information: If you need a product for a specific date, order it well ahead of time. Your manager must first authorise the purchase in Proceedo – only then is the order sent. It will then be 1–3 days before you can collect the product.

Do you not have access to Proceedo but want to make a purchase?
Ask a colleague who has access to Proceedo to make the purchase for you. You can take a course on Proceedo in order to get access to the system. More information (only in Swedish): https://internt.slu.se/proceedoutbildning.

Large formats

We create large tapestries, posters, fair and exhibition material and more using photos, presentation files, drawings and pdf-files. The prints can be produced on a number of materials (media) based on your needs and requests, e.g. coated photo paper, matt paper, etc.

In addition to fairs and exhibitions, large formats are used for wall or floor decorations, larger poster presentations, etc. Since we can print various materials, we also provide prints suitable for outdoor use.

We print a width up to 150 cm and, basically, unlimited length.
