Energy saving at SLU

Last changed: 25 April 2023

As a public authority, SLU has been tasked by the Government to take any possible and suitable measures to reduce energy use. Gas and electricity prices are at record highs, which is placing a heavy strain on society. Everybody must contribute to reducing energy use.

Each month, the amount of electricity purchased must be reported to the Swedish Energy Agency until the end of March 2023. Measures being taken to reduce energy use must be reported continually. You can follow SLU’s reporting further down the page.

A group comprising the environmental manager (chair), head of real estate management, a project manager and the head of NJ Faculty Office have been tasked with leading and coordinating the work to reduce energy use at SLU, beyond the existing environmental objectives.

We are in dialogue with Akademiska Hus and those in our organisation who are in the best position to take action have been encouraged to take steps to reduce energy use. Conditions differ depending on the tasks at the organisation, the location and building. All steps taken, no matter how great or small, are to be reported continually to energibesparing@slu.se.

Measures taken

SLU only buys green electricity, and in 2016, the university introduced its first energy-related environmental objectives. These objectives were toughened in 2021, and include:

  • producing our own fossil-fuel free heating and electricity;
  • improving energy efficiency (electricity, heating and cooling) by a minimum of 1% per rented square meter and properties owned by the university; and
  • working together with Akademiska hus to reduce energy consumption by a minimum of 15% by 2027. This objective includes electricity, heating and cooling and is measured in kWh per rented square meter.

SLU had already implemented a series of electricity saving measures prior to the current government assignment, and additional measures have recently been taken:

  • comprehensive communication efforts
  • coordination with property owners
  • reduced lighting in many buildings to 70%
  • turned off lighting in premises where it has been possible
  • installing occupancy-sensing lighting in more premises
  • optimising existing occupancy-sensing lighting
  • continuing to change to LED bulbs where needed
  • improving insulation, e.g., replacing windows
  • closed saunas and greenhouses, turned off fridges, freezers and other equipment that consumes large amounts of electricity, and
  • optimising/adjusting indoor temperatures and ventelation.

Do your bit

Little things make a difference, and everyone at SLU can do their bit. Every kWh counts. Remember to:

  • switch off any appliances not being used (e.g., HPLC units, fume hoods, shakers, environmental chambers),
  • close windows and doors, this is especially important when you go home. The ventilation system is calibrated based on closed rooms,
  • turn off the lights when you leave a room and when you go home,
  • make sure all electronic items are fully switched off – do not use the standby mode as this wastes energy,
  • disconnect chargers from the mains when they are not being used, they still use electricity even when not connected to a device,
  • check your power-saving settings on your computer and adjust them based on your needs,
  • defrost freezers,
  • if possible, avoid using automatic door operators,
  • if possible, take the stairs instead of using the lift,
  • avoid unnecessary use of hot water.
