Zuzanna M. Rosin

My principal research interests focus on farmland and rural ecology. I investigate the drivers of biodiversity in rural areas (villages and other human-related structures) and search for sustainable solutions in rural development. My second topic of interest is evolution of colour polymorphism in the land snail Cepaea nemoralis and ecological processes underlying this phenomenon.


Rural ecology

In my current project I aim to identify socio-ecological causes of the rapid decline of farmland biodiversity in Europe. Specifically, I investigate villages to assess the importance of local and landscape factors that shape bird biodiversity in rural areas.

My latest research (Rosin et al. 2020) shows that village modernization (i.e. increasing share of new and renovated homesteads) is associated with highly reduced abundance of building-nesting bird species in rural settlements. Improved energy performance of rural buildings and life quality of rural dwellers mean substantial reduction of rural biodiversity. This conflict in the UN's sustainability goals highlights the urgent need to acknowledge village ecological values and compensate for rural modernization.

Shell colour polymorphism in Cepaea

Shell colour polymorphism of the land snail Cepaea nemoralis (L.) is a well-known phenomenon, yet the proximate and ultimate factors driving its evolution remain uncertain. There has been a long debate on which factors (genetic processes, climatic selection, selective predation, landscape structure) have caused this variability, eventually we know that this is a complex problem.  I try to explain mechanisms underlying the differential preference of predators toward various colour morphs. Moreover, I aim to estimate the relative contribution of various environmental factors to the morph frequency variation in local Cepaea populations.
