Mohammad Hossein Banabazi

Mohammad Hossein Banabazi
I'm the researcher at the quantitative genetics group, at the department of animal genetics and breeding (HGEN), Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science Center (VHC), SLU. Here, we are interested in addressing the host factors for two new emerging viral diseases and searching for genes and SNPs that may be involved in susceptibility to these infections. We do this through the host transcriptome analysis under an infection challenge.

Research

I got my Ph.D. in animal genetics and breeding from the University of Tehran / Iran. My Ph.D. dissertation is entitled "Computational Strategies for Integration of Transcriptomic (RNA-Seq) Data into Animal Genome-enabled Predictions in Dairy Cattle". Our main aim was to apply transcriptomic data in the current genomic predictions. It may be a way to addressing of the Genetic-Environment interactions, and to detach them from the genetic evaluations. Then, the animals are always ranked the same in all environments and production systems.

In addition, I have already spent a Ph.D. sabbatical course as visiting researcher in SLU, for six months in 2015. During this course, I focused on computational biology and analyzed big data resulting from a project about Allele-Specific Expression (ASE) and parent of origin on two chicken weight-selection lines originated from experimental lines in VirginiaTech University. To reducing of mapping bias, I developed personalized genomes for each parent (instead of a reference genome).

My master thesis was entitled "Genetic variation within and between five Iranian sheep populations using microsatellites markers". In this course, I worked on the genetic diversity of the indigenous sheep populations. I have studied animal domestication and biodiversity through molecular tools particularly the DNA markers.
